Marshals

RANGE MARSHALS:

There are five categories of Marshals within Archery:
(1) Senior Range Marshal,
(2) Range Marshal,
(3) Range Marshal in Charge,
(4) Range Marshal of the Field, and
(5) Range Marshal in Training.
Each of these positions has different functions, duties,
and responsibilities.

Senior Range Marshal

A Senior Range Marshal is the archery equivalent of a Senior Marshal. They are appointed by the Minister of Archers based upon experience and recommendations from other Range Marshals. In general, Senior Range Marshals must have two years of working experience as a Range Marshal in the SCA. Senior Range Marshals mentor Range Marshals in Training.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1.  Work with Range Marshals in Training to improve their skills and knowledge of the rules of archery in Caid;
  2.  Assist with the Range Marshal in Training’s checklist.
  3.  Provide state updates for each Range Marshal in Training that they have taken on; and
  4.  Have the final say on whether a Range Marshal in Training should become a warranted Range Marshal.

 

Range Marshal

A Range Marshal is the local authority on archery safety and on the Caidan Rules of Archery. He/she is responsible for ensuring archers are safe on the field, and that they know, understand, and obey the Caidan Rules of Archery. Because Range Marshals are responsible for safety on the field, all Range Marshals must be eighteen (18) years of age or older and a current member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. Individuals who wish to become a Range Marshal must follow the procedure under Range Marshal in training as outlined in the Caid Target Archery Handbook.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1.  Maintaining general safety on the shooting line;
  2.  Authorizing target archers;
  3. Assist the Range Marshal in Charge or the Captain of Archers as required;
  4.  Assist Range Marshals in Training in completing their checklists; and
  5.  Generate Yearly Reports to the Captain of Archers.

 

Range Marshal-in-Charge

A Range Marshal in Charge is a Marshal in charge of a specific event or practice. He/She may be the only Range Marshal present or maybe working with any Range Marshal up to and including the Minister of Archers at the event. A Range Marshal in Charge must be a warranted Range Marshal. The Range Marshal in Charge supervises all archery activities at an event and is responsible for safety as well as the activities of the Archery List. The Captain of Archers is considered the Range Marshal in Charge for all local published practices in his/her geographical location. The Minister of Archers is deemed to be the Range Marshal in Charge of the Queen’s Champion Archery Tournament regardless of its location.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1.  Handles any complaint concerning rule violations, unsafe behavior, illegal weapons use, or other issues at the event.
  2.  Reports scores from the tournaments they are in charge of as well as advancements in archery rank;
  3.  Assigns Range Marshals to run the field at their events; and
  4. Completes and files an Injury report whenever an injury occurs at an archery event.

 

Range Marshal-of-the-Field

A Range Marshal of the Field supervise archery activity at an event or archery practice and is in charge of the safety of archers on the field. A Range Marshal of the Field must be a warranted Range Marshal or a Range Marshal in Training working under the direct supervision of a warranted Range Marshal.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1.  Maintain safety of Archers and others on or around the field;
  2.  Identify and resolve any rule violations, unsafe behavior, illegal weapons use or other issues at the event; and
  3.  Run the Archery event;

 

Range Marshal-In-Training

A Range Marshal in Training is an individual working to become a warranted Range Marshal. A Range Marshal in Training is under the direct tutelage of a Senior Range Marshal and is subject to instruction and correction by any warranted Range Marshal. He/She must complete the requirements as provided in the Caid Target Archery Handbook. He/She must, at minimum, run one round of an official archery tournament and four other archery shoots, under the supervision of the Range Marshal in Change. He/She must receive the recommendations of two other Range Marshals and pass a written test to become a Range Marshal.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1.  Assist in the enforcement of safety on the range and running the range.
